In this issue, the question of material abstraction in architecture is addressed through four built works: Kunstmuseum in Basel by Christ & Gantenbein, Diocesan Museum in Hannover by Meili Peter, Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw by Diener & Diener Architekten, and two information centres in Bielefeld by Max Dudler. All are rough and austere in appearance, heavy in their material and abstract manifestation, and therefore also good examples of not only pure aesthetic statements, but also expressions of moral attitudes. In a thorough analysis, this kind of plain language and clarity of form is revealed as an intention toward artistic refinement—one that is highly contemporary.
